BRICS Summit Impact: The Potential to Unlock Music Industry Synergy
|
Nicholas Maweni, Chairperson of SAMRO and a music advocate, discussed the 15th BRICS Summit that South Africa hosted from August 22 to 24. He emphasised the urgent need for BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) to collaborate on music copyright laws. Each country previously operated under distinct regulations, creating obstacles for artists seeking international partnerships. Aligning these laws could facilitate creative collaborations while safeguarding musicians’ rights.
The South African Copyright Amendment Bill faced issues inconsistent with international treaties. The summit coincided with Women’s Month, highlighting the need to address gender disparities in the music industry. This event provided a platform for BRICS nations to collaborate on improving music copyright and creating a more equitable environment among many pressing issues.

Lira: A Journey of Strength and Resilience.
|
Last month we commemorated Women’s month and in that we put a spotlight on some inspiring women we have the honour of partnering with. In April 2022, while on a musical journey in Germany, one of our clients, Lira’s life took an unexpected turn when she suffered a stroke. The ‘Feel Good’ hitmaker was hospitalised, her voice silenced by an unforeseen assailant – the stroke that impaired her speech.
In a recent interview with 702’s Relebogile Mabotja, Lira unveiled the inner workings of her journey, revealing a heart that beats not just for herself, but for others. “I wasn’t worried about myself, but I was worried about other people,” Lira humbly shared, highlighting her innate compassion even in the midst of personal trials.

Kwesta gives Sheer Publishing its flowers.
|
Kwesta has been a partner with Sheer Publishing for years, in fact, since his stardom launched back in the days of ButtaBing. Speaking to the award-winning artist, he had some incredible words to say about Sheer Publishing.
“My music publishing is done by Sheer Publishing. They have helped me with many things, pretty much my whole career. we’ve been fortunate enough to have a bunch of songs in sync deals, movies and ads. I’ve also had many features with many artists and had a lot of radio airplay. It would be impossible to count (and track) that on my own. And that’s why having a publisher like Sheer Publishing is important,” he shared.
