SONGS Music Publishing client Lorde has won her first VMA with the music video for her breakout hit “Royals” and became the first female artist to ever take home the Moonman trophy in the Rock category’s history!
A New Zealand native, Lorde, aka Ella Yelich-O’Connor, exploded onto the scene earlier this year with her debut single and video “Royals,” which has spent 6 weeks at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 charts. She is the youngest solo female artist to attain the top spot in 25 years and the only artist from New Zealand to ever reach Number One on Billboard’s Hot 100.
The track also reigned supreme atop Billboard’s Alternative Track Chart for seven weeks, the longest in the 25 year history of the chart by a female artist. Not confined to Pop and Alternative categories, “Royals” was a Number One rock song and is a huge success at other formats, currently sitting at Number 2 on the Mediabase Rhythmic airplay chart and at 28 on the Mediabase Urban airplay chart.
Her debut album, Pure Heroine entered Billboard’s album charts at Number 3 and has remained in the top 10 to date. Here in the U.S., Lorde has already performed on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and “Ellen.”
