Sauti Sol (Winners Best African Act 2014 MTV EMA) NISHIKE music video becomes the group’s first to reach a million hits on YouTube. The controversial NISHIKE music video from Kenya has reached a million hits eight months after it’s release (April 2014). NISHIKE was also nominated at the 2014 Channel O Music Video Awards as the Most Gifted Music Video from East Africa.
Simultaneously, The BBC’s 1Xtra DJ Edu has named Sauti Sol among Africa’s Top 5 Acts to Watch in 2015. Sauti Sol SURA YAKO was the first song to top BBC 1Xtra’s show exclusively featuring the best African music – DJ Edu’s weekly Destination Africa Show. All the band members have received the news well and are very excited about new music and upcoming third album. SURA YAKO’s producer, Savara of Sauti Sol says, “I didn’t think while producing that the song to get that far. Was just doing my job and I only thought those who love Swahili would relate; but the world did too for different reasons and now it’s just a mater of time before our next releases.” Regarding NISHIKE’s million hits, Chimano of Sauti Sol says, “It started out controversial but with strategy, patience and a #MTVEMA award we’re here now. I’m glad and happy to be part of this journey.”
