The Inaugural Success of the Sheer Songwriter Series Masterclass, marking a vibrant beginning to the ASE Partnership

Sheer Publishing Africa and the Academy of Sound Engineering (ASE) successfully hosted their first masterclass at the SABC Studios in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. The event took place on Friday, April 12th, 2024, marking a pivotal collaboration between these industry leaders. The masterclass drew attendance from, industry professionals, renowned musicians, and aspiring music professionals. The purpose of the engagement was to, foster an atmosphere of learning, networking.

Themed “The Art of Amapiano,” the masterclass kicked off under The Sheer Songwriter Series initiative, hosted by Sheer Publishing Africa’s Senior A&R Associate, Themba Molongoana. Panellists included accomplished artist, songwriter and performer Sizwe Alakine renowned international producer K-Zaka, talent manager and founder of the Music Business Academy Gift Mdlalose, and head of A&R at Sheer Publishing, Kefiloe Molefe. The founder and director of the Academy of Sound Engineering, Nick Matsukis weighed in the regulatory framework and the challenges it poses for creators in the burgeoning Amapiano genre.

Notable industry figures such as vocalist Tshedi Monkoe of afro pop group Malaika, award winning singer Nomfundo Moh, and reggae & hip-hop artist Menelik Nesta Gibbons aka Don Dada, alongside Sheer’s clients and production composers, enriched the discussions on crucial topics like split sheet accuracy, artists management and the role of music publishers in the industry.

Participants left the masterclass with a deeper understanding of ownership challenges, the intricacies of the songwriting process in regard to Amapiano singles, and the importance of adhering to proper procedures for split sheets and copyright regulations. The event also sparked conversations on expanding music education to encompass essential aspects like artist management, catering to the evolving needs of the music industry.

The masterclass concluded on a high note, with attendees commending the open and informative dialogue that transpired throughout the event. This inaugural session exemplified the shared commitment of Sheer Publishing Africa and ASE to promote knowledge-sharing and professional development within the music community.
